BREP's Director of Research Education Participated in the BSCS "Keys to Science" Workshops, Sponsored by the Pfizer Foundation

Mr. Felipe Padilla, Director of Research Education of the BREP program, was invited to attend the "Content Updates through Scientific Inquiry" and the "Molecular Biology and Biotechnology" workshops at the Keys to Science Institute of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) organization in Colorado Springs, CO. Mr. Padilla's participation was sponsored by the Pfizer Foundation.

BREP Science Teachers Participate in the International Workshop "Microbes by the Sea", sponsored by Pfizer Foundation

BREP science teachers, Ms. Evelyn Díaz Valdés from the Jesús T. Piñ eiro School in Cidra and María J. Cruz Ocasio from the S. U. Ramón E. Betances School in Arecibo, were invited to participate in the workshop "Microbes by the Sea " held at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Connecticut in July, 2005. This international workshop was supported by the Pfizer Foundation.

Workshop on the Integration of Forensic Science in the Classroom

On August 20th, the BREP program held its second 2005 Professional Development activity, a workshop focusing on the integration of forensic science in the classroom. Twenty eight teachers from various schools throughout Puerto Rico participated in the event. The workshop was organized and presented by physics teacher, Carmen Fernández M.Ed., who trained at Pfizer in Connecticut on how to incorporate forensic science into the classroom and attract the attention of students to science. The workshop was divided into three parts.

BREP Program is Highlighted by Puerto Rico TV Channel

The BREP Program received the visit of local journalist Ms. Charito Fraticelli, who prepared a special report of the program for Telemundo, Channel 2, TV Station. The story first aired on prime time, during the evening news segment, on Wednesday, June 14th, 2005 and has been repeated in several occasions. The Summer Internship Program and the BioMed Battle Team Comic Book series were the focused of the report. Middle School Students participating in the Summer Internship Program were interviewed and filmed while conducting research laboratory activities.

Special Launching of the BioMed Battle Team Comic Book at Borders Bookstore

 

On Friday, April 16, 2005, the scientific and administrative staff of the Puerto Rico BREP Program presented the comic book "Cardiac Crisis" at Borders Bookstore. Dr. Emma Fernández Repollet, Principal Investigator, provided an overview of the program and introduced young Puerto Rican artist and BREP's comic book designer, Mr. Ricardo Loperena. Mr. Loperana was available to answer questions and autograph copies of the comic book during the event.
