Summer Intership 2007
The Biomedical Research Education Program of Puerto Rico (BREP-PR), a federally funded program supported by a SEPA (Science Education Partnerhsip Award) from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR), will be sponsoring a Biomedical Summer Internship during June 18-22, 2007. Twenty seven (27) students from several Middle Schools within the Island will participate in the internship. Students were selected based on the recommendations of their science teachers.
The 2007 Summer Internship will consist of conferences, informal talks and interactive laboratory workshops. Researchers from the Medical Sciences Campus, as well as science teachers will collaborate in these activities. The activities include: informal talks about laboratory security; scientific, Techniques used in light and electron transmission microscopy, and the use of animals in research. The interactive workshops will focus on DNA identification and its use in forensic science, experiments using Green Chemistry and the characterization of microorganisms using microbiology techniques. In addition, the students will be able to converse with researchers at the Medical Sciences Campus about career opportunities in the area of biomedical sciences. During the Internship students will visit the institute of Forensic Sciences and the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy.
At the conclusion of the Internship, the students will receive a Certificate of Achievement from Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Principal Investigator of BREP and Vice President for Research and Technology of the University of Puerto Rico.
This is the fifth Biomedical Summer Internship sponsored by the BREP program. Over seventy one (71) students have benefited from this unique experience. Through these special summer activities the program expects to promote the interest of Puerto Rican students in a biomedical research career, especially in areas related to the diseases that affect the Puerto Rican population.
