Science Education Partnership Award Annual Directors Meeting


Dr. Abe Schwartz; Co-Investigator of the Puerto Rico Biomedical Research Education Program; Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, Principal Investigator of the Puerto Rico Biomedical Research Education Program; Dr. L. Tony Breck, National Center for Research Resources, NIH; and Dr. Rebecca Poon, Technical Advisor of the Puerto Rico Biomedical Research Education Program.

The Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) Directors Meeting was held on February 26-28, 2004 at the St. Louis Science Center. The attendees were welcomed by Frieda Smith, St. Louis Science Center and Vicki May, Washington University.

The meeting opened with a presentation by Dr. L. Tony Beck, National Center for Research Resources, NIH, who provided an updated overview of the SEPA Program. Plenary sessions included conferences by Dr. David Ucko, NSF, "Informal Science Education at NSF"; Mark Hertle, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, "Peer review evaluation", and Charles Carlson, NAHSEP Evaluation Committee, "Assessment of Evaluation Strategies used in SEPA Projects 1991-2004".

SEPA Program Directors participated actively in discussion panels and break out sessions addressing topics such program sustainability, program management, program evaluation, impact of minority participation, web-based initiatives, community outreach, and program dissemination. Issues related to program evaluation such as the use of logic models and technology in assessment and evaluation, evaluating professional development, and measuring student outcomes were discussed in detail by the attendees.

Biomedical Education Research Program (BREP) Program Directors at the UPR Medical Sciences Campus, Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet and Dr. Abe Schwartz, attended the meeting and reported the progress of the program at the special Poster Session.
