Second Puerto Rico Biotechnology Week
During the second celebration of the Biotechnology Week, the BREP program was awarded a special distinction for promoting the interest of K-12 students in biomedical research focusing on diseases and disorders that disproportionately impact our population. Principal Investigator, Dr. Emma Fernández-Repollet, accepted the award on behalf of the BREP Program which is funded by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA R25-RR07415) from the National Center for Research Resources a component of the National Institutes of Health.

The Biotechnology Week is coordinated by the university-industry consortium INDUNIV. The activities sponsored during the week included a special exhibit of technological equipment used in the biotechnology field as well as of educational and research programs that have an impact on the technological development of the Island. In addition, a conference addressing the impact of biotechnology on economic development was organized for the legislators at the Puerto Rico Capitol on September 19, 2006. The event helped disseminate the initiatives conducted by the Biotechnology Alliance, INDUNIV, as well as the academic and the industrial sectors to promote Puerto Rico's competitiveness and the development of a knowledge-based economy. The exhibit provided a special forum to disseminate BREP informal education tools to the Puerto Rican industry and business community.
