General Description

Photo of 3DPrinter

The BioMed Innovation Laboratory is located on the 3rd floor of the Medical Sciences Campus and consists of an area divided in office and laboratory space. Laboratory staff includes the principal investigator, research collaborators, and undergraduate students.

Previous research efforts focused on basic and clinical applications of Flow Cytometry, especially the role of T cells in type 1 diabetes mellitus. This was accomplished through the BioMed Innovation Laboratory (BIL).

Currently, research activities target the development of innovative applications of 3D printing with impact on biomedical research. To address this objective, BIL houses a printer capable of making prints of 3D designs and creating pieces or three-dimensional models from digital designs, and conducts workshops to promote biomedical research among high school, undergraduate and graduate students. The use of 3D printing in biomedical applications has spread to include the manufacturing of medical prosthesis, tissue and organ implants. We are using this technology to create innovative educational tools to promote biomedical research in Puerto Rico, particularly in the area of Pharmacology.
