The Puerto Rico Biomedical Education Research Program (PR-BREP)
Mission Statement
The Puerto Rico Biomedical Education Research Program (PR-BREP), created in 2003 through an NIH-SEPA grant (R25-RR-07415), focuses on two initiatives: a Comic Book Series and a Summer Internship Program. Special emphasis is given to health disparities in Hispanic/Latino groups such as diabetes, heart diseases, hypertension, and HIV. Through these years, PR-BREP has demonstrated that it can provide Puerto Rican middle and high school students with unique experiences related to biomedical research using a comprehensive approach that involves the University, the Department of Education, the industry, and the community.
The mission of the program remains to increase the number of middle and high school students who understand biomedical research and pursue careers related to diseases that affect disproportionately the Puerto Rican population.
